The rebooted Smart launches the first Salvo

Smart on Thursday unveiled the first model made under the joint ownership of the Mercedes-Benz and Gili brands.

Recall, the two automakers established the 50:50 joint venture Smart Automobile in 2019, which is based in China and is responsible for overseeing the development and production of future electric smarts শুরু appropriately labeled # 1, starting with a sub-compact crossover.

The incident took place in Berlin, the capital of Germany. At last year’s inaugural Munich Auto Show, a preview of # 1 in Germany was unveiled.

While Smart traditionally operates exclusively in the MiniCar segment, # 1 sees the brand expand into the high volume subcompact segment. The crossover stretches about 168 inches in length, making it about 1.5 inches shorter than the Mini Countryman, its main goal. The trunk storage is a maximum of 14.5 cubic feet and the rear seats are flat folded and the carb weight of the car is a little over 4,000 pounds.

Underpinning # 1 is considered a shortened version of Geely’s SEA modular electric-vehicle platform, providing support for faster charging and over-the-air updates. Guaranteed spaces for # 1 include a single electric motor with a 268 hp rated rear axle, enough for a top speed of 112 miles per hour. A 66-kilowatt-hour battery should provide a range of up to 250 miles and enable 10-80% charge within 30 minutes of charging at a maximum of 150 kilowatts.

The # 1 exterior design has a clear link to Mercedes ‘latest crop EVs, which is not surprising considering Gordon Wagner, Mercedes’ design chief, also led the design team at Smart. A great feature is the impressive — for a crossover — drag coefficient 0.29 Cd. Details of the design like hidden door handle and active grill shutter help to achieve this low figure.

Inside you’ll find seating for five, as well as premium features like a 9.2-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.8-inch infotainment screen and a 10-inch head-up display. An app will enable easy sharing of cars through digital key functions.

# 1 is the first member of the car family to aim for a next-generation Mini lineup, although the Mini will continue to offer electric powertrains as well as internal-combustion engines for several years to come. We can imagine a ForTwo-style hatch that is part of Smart’s future lineup, and possibly a sedan.

With Smart out of the US in 2020, we don’t expect the brand to be back here anytime soon. In other words, don’t forget to check out any of the new smarts on the local streets.
