Predictive concepts give birth to Model 3 rivals

Hyundai was seen testing a prototype of a compact electric sedan called the Ioniq 6.

While this may seem like a modern interpretation of Dodge Neon under heavy camouflage gear, the final design is expected to be in line with the stunning Hyundai Prophecy concept unveiled in 2020.

Some more unusual features of the prediction concept, such as joystick steering, will not be able to produce it. But some of the concept’s styling features, such as pixel-style light and propeller-inspired wheels to reduce wind resistance, can be seen in the prototype.

The Ioniq 6 will be released soon, which means we’ll see it as a 2023 model. It will feature Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP modular EV platform that debuted on the Ioniq 5 and is shared with the related Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60. The platform will launch a major crossover Hyundai in 2024, presumably as the Ioniq 7.

The platform supports a 0-60 mph time of less than 3.5 seconds, a maximum speed of 161 mph and a range of up to 300 miles. These figures may be reserved for an Ioniq 6 N performance range-topper, a model Hyundai has teased in the past. Hyundai is already working on an Ioniq 5 N, and there is already the Kia EV6 GT with 576 hp.

The e-GMP platform also has an 800-volt electrical system, which makes it possible to charge at a high kilowatt rating — we are talking about 80% charge in 18 minutes. Another feature is the two-way charging, which enables e-GMP vehicles to power the device and home and even charge other EVs.

Hyundai has not confirmed the Ioniq 6 for the United States but there is a good chance to see it here. It could also be made here, as Hyundai announced in 2021 plans to invest $ 7.4 billion in its US operations by 2025, much of which will be spent on adding EV production.

The Ioniq 6 will directly compete with the Tesla Model 3 and with a slightly lower amount of more premium BMW i4 and Polestar 2.

Stay tuned for more details on Ioniq 6 as development continues.
