New York City has unveiled the first Ford Mustang Mach-e electric police car

The New York Police Department on Friday unveiled its first Ford Mustang Mach-E Cop using the background of the 2022 New York International Auto Show.

The New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services announced last December that city officials have chosen to order 184 electric crossovers for law enforcement and emergency response use, the first of which will take place this summer.

New Yorkers will already be familiar with the Mustang Mach-E, as some taxi companies operating in the city already use it, naturally in shades of yellow. One of those companies is Gravity, which has both the Mustang Mach-E and the Tesla Model Y in its fleet.

DCAS says it has chosen the range-topping Mustang Mach-E GT for its police cruisers. This grade offers 480 hp and 600 pound-feet of torque, as well as an EPA-rated 270 mile range. DCAS added that it has installed 29 fast chargers for use by NYPD, as well as 103 fast chargers for public use. There are plans to install 275 more fast chargers by 2022.

Electrical crossovers replace aging internal-combustion-powered models in 6,200-vehicle NYPD fleets. According to DCAS, the number of electric vehicles will be gradually increased until the full fleet by 2035.

DCAS Deputy Commissioner Keith Carman said: “This order from All-Electric Mac-S will enable our law enforcement agencies to fully test the electrical models and fix maintenance, lights and sirens, charging and other operational issues.” A statement said, “This is an important step towards our goal of a fully electric fleet.”

Ford, which is one of the leading suppliers of police vehicles in the country, has not yet disclosed what has changed the features of its police-spec Mustang Mach-Es in addition to the obvious items like sirens and flashing lights.

Note that the Mustang Mach-E is not NYPD’s first electric cruiser. The department launched a Tesla Model 3 test last year that was converted to police duty. DCAS indicated that it could order up to 250 electric sedans.
