Luxury in 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG EQS Performance EV brings 148,550

Mercedes’ AMG performance arm specializes in drawing extraordinary power from the internal combustion engine, especially the Rowdy V-8s, then tuning a car or SUV around that power. With the advent of electric propulsion, AMG now focuses on electric motors and skateboard platforms, starting with the 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG EQS.

Although not the first electric AMG — the difference goes to the limited-powered SLS electric drive released in 2012 — the AMG EQS is the first mass-market electric AMG. It sets a new standard for luxury and performance in an EV package when it comes to $ 148,550 in the spring.

Based on it, like the EQS sedan, AMG runs Mercedes’ EVA2 Group platform for EQS electric vehicles. It is a skateboard full of battery cells and is set on a four-link front axle and a multi-link rear axle. Also like the standard EQS, the AMG version uses an air suspension with an adaptive damper.

We found EQS suspension to be one of its biggest strengths. It delivers the smooth, controlled ride we expect in a Mercedes and rarely gets into an electric car. However, to add some more fun to the equation, AMG upgrades the suspension to EQS.

AMG tunes the suspension for performance. Each damper has two externally mounted pressure-relief valves as found in the latest AMG GT 4-door coupe. One valve controls rebound damping and the other compression damping. By separating them, they can carry greater control and allow a wider spread between soft and firm.

The structure is also improved. The front subframe and motor mounts are specified for AMG EQS, while the rear axle beam is redesigned for AMG duty. The stabilizer bar, wheel carrier, and control arms come from other AMG models.

On the road, the ride is significantly more rigid and controlled than the soft EQS, but the car still looks like an electric version of an S-Class. Its main strength is its ability to smooth out sharp edges to always give a comfortable ride.

My drive from Palm Springs to Los Angeles included a drive through the hills outside Palm Springs. In esses and switchbacks, the AMG EQS tilts at a slight angle and then takes a set to carve better than this big and heavy car. Mercedes did not provide full specs, but considering the EQS 450+ weighs 5,888 pounds, the carb weighs close to 6,000 pounds. Keeping the weight of the battery low helps here, as standard rear-axle steering speeds down to 37 miles per hour with a rotation of up to 9 degrees.

The all-wheel-drive system responds to the selected drive mode. Comfort mode draws most of the power from the front motor, while the balance goes backwards in Sport and Sport + mode. I chose Sport + for the mountain for the best throttle response, strong dampness and a rear-drive feel through the all-wheel-drive system.

The steering is light, stable and fairly fast, but between the steering and the suspension, the AMG EQS doesn’t give almost as much road feel as the Porsche Taycan GTS I drove a few days ago.

However, it has as much or more power, and the AMG EQS performs better on a straight line than a corner. One pair of fixed magnet motors, one on each axle, grouped for 649 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque. AMG has upgraded the motors with new windings, stronger currents and new inverter software that all produce higher rotational speeds and thus more power.

A boost function available in the Race Start (Think Launch Control) mode of the standard AMG Dynamic Plus package increases the output to 751 hp and 752 lb-ft for small explosions. The initial image of the car with the AMG EQS 53 mark and the graphics like the one above listed the car as AMG EQS 53 4Matic + and made us believe that a more powerful version is coming, probably called EQS 63 or 73. Horsepower can reach 800 or 800. Superior.

Drivers need to be accustomed to this new type of power delivery. It toggles the steering wheel pedal cycle between driving at low speeds and in everyday traffic and between three brake regeneration settings, which varies from freewheeling to about one-pedal driving.

Throw throttle on any mode or region setting and things will get exciting. Each axle gives the motor an all-wheel drive that sends the prepared and waiting electric torque to the pavement as it sinks in your back seat and rocks the car forward. The AMG EQS can hit 60 miles per hour from a stop in just 3.4 seconds at race start and reach a top speed of 155 miles per hour. I’ve never activated a race start, but the power thrills whenever I dig deep into the throttle.

The same cannot be said about brakes. Our main problem with standard EQS is a spice brake paddle. The paddle feels more rigid here, but it is still very soft and the combination of regeneration and friction braking can be unpredictable, sometimes requiring extra pressure to stop. This is a shame because the car has a lot of power from the big 15.4-inch front rotor with 6-piston caliper and the 14.9-inch rear rotor with single-piston caliper. Buyers may even choose carbon-ceramic brakes with a huge 17.3-inch front rotor, but we’ll feel better than rastrack-ready brakes.

AMGs are known for their high-noise emission notes and in the electrical age AMG has a solution: the sound system. Using loudspeakers and subwoofers, EQS creates both sound inside and outside the car in a continuous authentic mode and more noticeable performance mode that breaks down into more balanced, sporty and powerful settings. In Tekton GTS I have noticed that hovering makes a sound like flying saucer. Like that car, the sound changes to match the throttle position, but here it is quiet, even in its strongest setting.

Standard EQS’s 107.8-kwh battery pack provides power for AMG EQS motors. It uses a 400-volt electrical architecture and can charge up to 200 kilowatts. It’s less than a car with an 800-volt architecture, but according to Mercedes, according to European WLTP standards, it can still add 186 miles in 19 minutes. The maximum range and efficiency are unlocked by choosing Comfort Mode, which is up to 277 miles at the top. AMG has reconfigured the battery management system to optimize the car’s AMG-specific sport and Sport + modes.

The cabin also has some AMG components. Standard front sport seats have a blend of leather and microfiber with red stitching and napa leather is optional. The leather-wrapped AMG steering wheel looks perfect with its small diameter and chunky rim. The interior show’s star is a 56-inch hyperscreen dashboard with a 17.7-inch central touchscreen and dual 12.3-inch touchscreen driver and a single panel of glass at the bottom for front passengers. It gets AMG-specific screen that shows performance information including lap time.

From the outside, the Affalterbach looks smaller than most other vehicles. The plastic front panel does its best to mimic AMG’s Panamericana grille with a silver vertical strip where there is a grill. The front splitter and side seals are nicely painted black, and the rear bumper has a diffuser. Fills standard AMG-specific 21-inch wheel wells, 22-inch optional. It has been smoothed to a very slippery 0.23 drag coefficient.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG EQS does not qualify as a sports car, but then again, there is no AMG S-Class. It is large and comfortable with lots of energy thrilling in a straight line. It adds some vital luxury to a new luxury market and proves that the AMG can do much more than futz with the V-8s.
