Hyundai’s all-electric Ioniq 5 – the current Auto Express car of the year – has been named the World Car of the Year for 2022.
The Cool Crossover lost sister brands Kia’s EV6 and Ford’s Mustang Mach-E in the overall crown, beating the Mercedes EQS and Audi e-tron GT to become the best electric car of the year. To complete the hat-trick, the Ioniq 5 was also awarded Best Car Design of the Year.
Commenting on the win, Sanyup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai Global Design Center, said, “With IONIQ 5, we set out to create a new dynamic experience – a game-changer. This extraordinary vehicle has been made possible by the passion and effort of the designers and engineers who pushed the boundaries of what is possible in EV space. “
A panel of 102 international journalists, including Auto Express editor-in-chief Steve Fowler and chief columnist Mike Rutherford, voted for the World Car Awards.
Other winners of the awards announced at the 2022 New York International Auto Show include the Mercedes EQS World Luxury Car of the Year, Audi’s E-Tron GT Performance Car Trophy and Toyota Yaris Cross’s new World Urban Car. Award of the Year.
In good news for Hyundai, Luc Donckerwolke, Hyundai Motor Group’s Chief Creative Officer, has been named World Car Person of the Year in February 2022 for his significant contribution to overseeing the development of new models, including the IONIQ 5.
The 2022 Auto Express Awards are not far off, the winners will be announced at a live event in London on 5 July.
