Drivers plan 21 million trips on the busiest Easter Bank holiday in a decade

UK drivers plan to make 21.46 million leisure trips this year between Good Friday and Easter Monday, making it the busiest Easter Bank holiday weekend since 2014.

According to data from RAC and traffic analytics firm INRIX, Good Friday will see 4.62 million motorists make leisure travel, while Easter Monday will see 3.96 million. Easter will see 3.63 million trips each on Saturday and Sunday, and an additional 5.6 million will be made at any time during the four-day period.

RAC and INRIX predict that the closure of parts of the extended railway network between London and Birmingham will further increase road traffic. Train strikes are also expected in parts of Scotland and north of England.

M6 northbound between Liverpool and Lake District, M6 southbound to Stoke-on-Trent, M25 between Surrey and M40 departures and the A303 near Stonehenge could experience the worst traffic weekends.

According to RAC, only 19 percent of drivers always check the condition of their vehicle before embarking on a long journey. The breakdown company advises motorists to check the level of oil and coolant in their vehicle as well as the condition of the tires before driving.

Inflated fuel prices are expected to keep a small number of drivers off the road this weekend – six per cent say that’s why they’re avoiding driving. National highways are lifting more than 1,000 miles of road work to reduce traffic congestion.

Bob Pishu, a transport analyst at INRIX, said: “Even with the significant increase in petrol prices, we expect a big jump in vacation driving over the last few years.

“Drivers should expect traffic jams on major roads around urban areas and popular destinations. Knowing when and where traffic jams will occur can help drivers avoid the stress of sitting in traffic. ”

RAC spokesman Rod Dennis added: “The key to avoiding the worst of any traffic jams is planning. Simply put, the sooner you leave in the morning, the more likely you are to miss the worst line, especially if you travel long distances.”
