2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 Spy Shot And Video: Minor Updates Planned

The original Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been stuck for four decades and has been given multiple updates over the years to keep it fresh. We’re not sure how long Mercedes plans to keep the current G-Class on the shelf before redesigning it, but it looks like the automaker will at least give the car periodic updates in a fashion similar to its predecessor.

We’ve already seen the prototypes of an updated version of the Standard G-Class, and now we have a tester’s illustrated spy shot for the G63 updated from AMG. Both G-Class versions are expected to debut as 2023 models later this year, and prototypes of both are also shown in the video below.

Mercedes is testing a high-riding 4×4 square option for the second-generation G-Class, which we’ll probably see introduced together with this update.

Judging by the disguised gear in the G63 prototype, we will probably see a modified fascia on the front. And the general shape of the grill should remain unchanged, a new mesh pattern is expected.

We were told that the dash was also covered, suggesting some changes inside as well. A key update inside should be the addition of Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system, featuring each current Mercedes Bar G-Class.

The G63 is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 that is good for 577 hp and 627 pound-feet of torque. Although AMG has introduced a plug-in hybrid powertrain using this V-8 in its GT 4-door coupe, we do not expect the G63 to still go on the plug-in hybrid route.

The addition of the light-hybrid system already offered with the 4.0-liter V-8 on some Mercedes models is a potential bet. The system has an electric motor capable of adding a temporary boost of 21 hp and 184 lb-ft. An electric power train is planned for the G-Class, although it will not arrive until 2024.

Stay tuned for updates as development continues.
