2022 Audi S8 gets a new look, same split personality

Driving behind the 2022 Audi S8 on a winding road around Oceanside, California, seems a bit awkward. When the car in front of me turns left, the right side sits higher than the left. When it goes to the right, the left side is elevated. I’m not a physicist, but the laws of physics tell me that the suspension is reacting the way it should.

I’m on another S8 and the same thing is happening to me, even when I switch from dynamic mode to comfort mode. The car’s optional electrohydraulic predictive active suspension works here, and it makes the larger luxury sedan more sportier and also improves passenger comfort.

After a 2020 redesign, the 2022 S8 gets a mid-cycle update that doesn’t really change the car. It mostly involves new lighting technology, updated infotainment and revised front and rear design, including a repositioned A8 / S8 lineup.

Predictive Active Suspension is the best party trick of the car, and it’s part of the update. It is no longer available for the regular A8 and is optional instead of the standard on the S8. As an added bonus the system can detect an impending side collision and increase that aspect of the vehicle by 3.1 inches so that the structure can better absorb the impact. The safety factor and the dual personality of the S8 that combines luxury with sport is definitely worth the 6,000 investment.

The cool suspension system is one of several features that contribute to the S8’s ability to change from luxurious to sporty. Others include a sport rear differential that can rotate the outer wheel and overdrive, as well as speed-sensitive all-wheel steering, all-wheel drive, a three-chamber air suspension, adaptive damper and, of course, an authentic V-8.

The Predictive Active Suspension uses a forward-facing camera that detects roadblocks and rot. It can respond within 300 milliseconds and employ an electromechanical actuator on each wheel to push the control arm so that the tires can avoid holes and increase the impact of the bump. It’s part of a ride that is rarely bothered by road imperfections, even with low-profile 265 / 35R21 tires, but the ability of the system to propel the car in the opposite direction to a turn is also part of the comfort equation. The reverse tilt helps passengers to lean too much in turn, which would otherwise disturb the quiet but connected ride.

From behind the wheel, the S8 rivals the BMW 7-Series for sport, especially in dynamic mode. Flat handling is obvious, but the car turns sharply and turns voluntarily. The rear-axle steering, which can rotate the rear wheels at 5.0 degrees as opposed to the front, at 37 miles per hour, also reduces the turning radius and the active rear differential chips. The steering starts light but gets stronger with speed and provides quick, direct response.

Powertrain has a similar dual character and is exclusive to the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 S8 this year because the A8 has lost both its V-8 and its plug-in hybrid model. It produces 563 hp and 590 pound-feet of torque, but with the same traffic as any gas engine, the throttle and S8 toddle go easily. Switch to dynamic mode though, or give the throttle a deep stab and the beast will wake up. It makes a strong roar and accelerates the car from 0-60 mph in just 3.8 seconds. The 8-speed automatic provides smooth changes that are fast in dynamic mode and all-wheel drive ensures that power goes efficiently on the pavement.

To help save fuel, the V-8 features cylinder-deactivation and light-hybrid technology. Still, the fuel economy for this high-powered, 5,126-lb sedan is a weakness with 14 mpg CT, 23 highways and 17 combined.

Dual screen, dual personality

The cabin has a dual personality of its own, but this time it’s a mix of luxury and technology. It still plays 10.1- and 8.6-inch touchscreens with a 13.1-inch digital instrument cluster and haptic response to the infotainment system, but this year processing speeds have improved by a factor of 10. A head-up display is available, such as a screen for rear seat passengers attached to the back of the front seats. They can control some vehicle functions as well as display and stream content from passengers’ mobile devices. It is easy to see the tech angle with many digital screens.

The luxury is evident in the S8’s space, comfort, and well-chosen, well-assembled content. High-end standard features include carbon-fiber interior trim, synthetic suede door trim, heated diamond contrast stitching with Velcona leather upholstery and cold front seats with a massage function that features 18 air-conditioned cushions, 18 air-conditioned cushions. Depends. Climate control, and a Bang & Olufsen audio system with 23 speakers. It also has a ceremonial feel to it, as the ambient light glows when you start the car and the vents present themselves. Welcome to Luxury.

The front-seat occupants have plenty of space with 22-way power adjustment to dial in an ideal seating position. The S8 only comes in an extended-length body style, so the rear-seat space is also generous, and it can be more comfortable with a rear-seat comfort package that includes rear-seat heating, cooling, massage, heated armrests and a power recline function. Rear-seat passengers get a remote control, tray table, LED lighting and an available full center console that reduces the seating capacity up to four while improving comfort for those two rear passengers. Oddly, however, the trunk is only 12.5 cubic feet smaller than a compact car.

A new look

The exterior changes of the 2022 Audi S8 are subtle, which is normal in this section. The biggest exit from the previous model is the new front end, which has a more advanced matrix LED headlight with segmented light bars, a longer grille with L-shaped mesh material, and a modified lower front fascia with more technical design. The Matrix headlights have hundreds of LEDs that can be turned on and off to better illuminate the road without being seen by oncoming drivers. These have recently been legalized in the United States, but they are not yet effective, and no other car has a functional Matrix LED headlight.

On the back, Audi adds OLED taillights so there are several options for light signature. They also have a proximity indicator that enables them to turn on the lights when another vehicle approaches them. The rear fascia has a wider diffuser sporting horizontal bar.

The 2022 Audi S8 is priced at $ 117,995 including the destination, down from about $ 132,000 last year. It loses some of its cost-cutting tools, but it does compete with delivering a fun dual character that only matches BMW. With the inclusion of Predictive Active Suspension, you’ll get a car that runs the same as last year but with a new look and faster infotainment. That’s right for me because the S8 of this generation is always the winner.
