2022 Aston Martin DBX707 is singing a quiet riot

Even launch control effortlessly. Put the 2022 Aston Martin DBX707 in Sport +, brake jam, gas jam, hold the cluster until it turns red, then explode.

Aston’s most powerful production version of the Mercedes-AMG Twin-Turbo 4.0-liter V-8 is outstanding. At the dawn of electrification, it is also endangered, which makes this swan song a bitter sweet symphony.

With most of the 664 lb-ft of torque shifting to the rear axle and the wide hunch of the DBX707, the SUV pulls the passengers back with enough force to make them believe, if only for a moment, that they could be left behind. The V-8’s manic wailing centers on it, and although some engines are piped through note speakers, it roars with all the precision promised by the Top Industrial Revolution. The Terrible Beast can launch its 5,109-pound carb weight at 0-60 miles per hour in 3.1 seconds, and I’ve just started flirting with third gear.

The performance variant of Aston’s bestselling DBX SUV still carries a lot of excellence that could be proven, but the excellent engine translates 707 metric horsepower to 697 hp, which makes it even more powerful than its competitive ultra-luxury set, which includes Benchmarks for the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini UV and Aston, the 631-hp Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT, which also has a 60 mph mark of 3.1 seconds. ‘Take me to the ring.

The DBX707 is more powerful than the brand’s V12 Vantage, powered by a twin-turbocharged V-12 that produces a slight 690 hp.

With that coupe, the DBX707 puts Squarely Aston where it wants to be at the top of performance. For more than a century, the bespoke British brand was known for losing money, as were its touring cars, popular with the James Bond franchise.

“Here we are going to establish the brand from now on,” explained CEO Tobias Moyers at a press drive in Italy last week. “A different interpretation of the 707 and V12 Vantage brands.”

Moers know a thing or a lot about performance. Before he began operating the ship, led by Aston Martin, in 2020, he was the CEO of Mercedes-AMG and played a role in the partnership between Aston and AMG V-8. The former mechanical engineer carries himself as a gearhead enthusiast, especially when giving a hot lap on DBX707 at Aston’s proven ground in England in March.

“It’s nice to see the boss enjoy his new toy.” Angus Mackenzie writes Motor trends.

His enthusiasm for the first drive program in Sardinia, a mountainous island rising from the Italian part of the Mediterranean, became apparent a few weeks later. DBX707 sets the course as the new flagship.

This comes at a critical time in an industry shifting towards electrification, both to meet emissions regulations and to reduce further efficiency between the four wheels. The song of the swan is intoxicating, blowing from a quad stainless steel exhaust pipe in a greasy rear diffuser that comes out envious of the standard DBX and its 542-hp twin-turbo V-8. Additional output comes from modified fuel and valve mapping and from an updated exhaust system flowing from a ball-carrying turbocharger.

The Chunky Twin Rear Diffuser draws inspiration from Aston’s Valhalla Hypercar. Other changes to the low-slang body of the five-seater SUV include a larger and wider front grille, with six horizontal bars two-tiered to distinguish it from the standard DBX. The front has a downforce with a modified splitter, while the grille and side have extra air in and help cool the animal under the lower grille hood. At the back, a split roof spoiler creates a downforce on the rear rear window. A single back light bar is wide and rises like a mustache across the muscular back edge.

The side, front and rear fender vents help cool 6-piston calipers and huge carbon-ceramic brakes, 16.5 inches in diameter at the front and 15.4 inches at the rear. My test car had a carbon-fiber package, as well as 23-inch wheels (22 s standard) wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires. Yes, these are equally huge and the twin five-spoke wheels push the stars so far on the low end of the night that the body floats on them. Only in terrain mode, which increases the three-chamber air suspension from 7.9 inches of standard ground clearance to 8.7 inches, a wheel well gap is observed.

Unlike the standard DBX, there’s no Terrain + mode and drivers should check their heads before off-roading with this stunning performance machine, but with the $ 240,000, $ 3,086 destination fee, you can do whatever you want. We used it on a dirt road, through a few inches of standing water, and on a farm road, and the milling sheep didn’t question it.

In Sport mode, it is reduced from 0.8 inches to about 7.1 inches and then there is an off-load setting which further reduces it to about 6.9 inches. I put it in most sports and sport + mode, as the road to Sardinia claims.

Imagine the Angeles Crest Highway rising outside of LA, but snaping through narrow Italian villages where speeds have dropped from about 90 mph to 25 mph. As the blue sea glows in the distance, the road gets stuck on the goat-like ridge as the dropoffs disappear into the valley below. Washouts are common, and new concrete and rails lighten the long stretched part of the serpentine tarmac. On the other side of the summit, the Sardinians built a partial tunnel to hold the top of the hill, with beautiful columns supporting the lower side. The scenes are as stunning and dangerously confusing as a car.

Tight suspension mounts for front double whisbone suspension and multilink rear suspension help the DBX absorb uneven road contours, and the 707’s upgraded damper valving keeps the body taut and minimally tilted. The weight 52/48 is equally balanced on the front / rear, and the AWD system transmits 100% torque to the rear axle during launch. An electronic locking rear differential rotates the grip naturally on the rotating road, so that you can maintain both speed and lateral balance even though it ping pong in the curve. All of this weight is carried forward during braking, and Aston’s Electronic Active Roll Control transmits 50% of the torque to the front axle so that it can be handled better. From Sport to Sport + mode, the E-ARC changes the air spring rate for a tension, more spirit ride. But the steering sensation does not change between these modes, and the steering does not seem to be fixed at high speeds, yet it does mark the driver’s inputs.

After one turn, I almost hit a goat. Luckily, the brakes do their job and the little friend comes down the side of the hill unhindered. Despite the brake size, they don’t have the initial hard bite of some other performance cars. It seems more linear, less progressive, which can be good or bad depending on the type of road and driving. A track, you can ask for more bites. On the road, less bite means passengers do not jerk forward.

Another big difference from the DBX is that Aston switches to a 9-speed automatic transmission torque converter for a wet multi-plate clutch. Not only does it help handle all the extra torque, it also provides transfers in a snap that Aston says is 40% faster. A drive mode button on the center console has a manual mode that will keep the transmission in manual mode until the driver makes another decision. Or, they have a paddle shifter with a technique or two above the column-mounted sleeve. On steep ascents, when I have to descend from 8th to 4th or lower, I hold the downshift pedal for an extra beat and it descends to the lowest allowable gear for throttle input. In automatic mode, it transfers faster and more efficiently than I do, but like marital quarrels it is better to get input no matter how far away I am.

The most amazing thing about the DBX707 is that its performance is not as choppy as blistered. How quiet and composed it is around town and on the highway. Even on the 23rd. Acoustic laminated glass and tons of sound block the road from the Dedner cabin, and the engine only responds when called.

It complements the ultra-luxurious part of its mission, such as the soft-closed door and the great bridge of weir leather made from uninterrupted Scottish Highland bulls with barbed wire and bugs. There’s a chance to miss something with the gauges: an HP and torque meter can be found on the center screen, but Aston offers no display of active axle loads or G-force meters. A touchscreen is coming for mid-cycle refresh, and it will probably get more performance gauge then.

The DBX707 SUV maintains the promise of form, with easy entry and exit, and comfort for my 6-foot-5 drive partner in both front and rear seats. The second-row seat belt has all the romance and flexibility you need outside of an SUV, including a shoe or a power-folding rear seat from the cargo area.

The Ultra-Lux Performance SUV is a very narrow niche, but it uses it with an Aston Martin DBX707. Moers expects this to be 60-65% of all DBX sales, which is already more than half of all Aston sales. Since the launch of DBX, Aston’s losses have decreased, and $ 180,000 DBX will continue to flow. The financial rise to 0 240,000 707 is a small one for the customers who expect the best.

It’s a riot.
